CIS recap

Hey Lancers,

Sorry for not keeping you updated with the Lancer track and field news as diligently I as have been in the past. My training and school work have been taking up my time a lot  more than I expected. The life of a student athlete.
So it is official. The women's team won their 4th straight title. For those counting back home that is 11 out of the last 32 years a women's championship has been offered. So 1/3 off all the wins are hanging up in the St. Denis center's rafters. Fellow Lancer Celine Freeman-Gibb (http://theindoorworldofthrowing.blogspot.com/) won the women's shot put title and Aaron Bowman came 2nd in the 60m men's final with his second fastest time of 6.74.
On the down side the Men's team came 3rd with 17 points behind the Western Mustangs. Unable to come back from the losses the Men's team had one of their lowest scoring point totals in the last ten years.
My race did not go as planned and I was unable to make it into the final. I cam 9th and top 8 scored points for the team. I was disappointed in my performance but couldn't be happier with how the team and rookies performed. I know you can't PB every meet but sometimes you just want to go for the win. After my race my job was to cheer and support. If my voice wasnt toast after the meet then I didnt cheer enough and I am still unable to speak properly.
There are a lot of other results to be posted so stay tuned as I try and post as much as I can. Videos and pictures to come.

Great Job Lancers,
Austin Roth

THE OUA's day 1

Hey Lancers,

The team is here at York and we are ready to rumble. The meet doesnt start until 2pm but the excitement has been on full all week. With both the men's and women's teams having team building events all week long everyone is ready to give it there all. Some athletes already have the CIS auto standard in their events so this weekend is more about winning a championship banner for the school.

This morning the most of the team enjoyed the $1 breakfast at Ikea and headed back to the hotel for the team meeting and pump up video. Even though we have all seen the pictures from meets it always gets the heart pumping when you see the team together, pictures all lined up to a great beat and seeing yourself on the screen. Now I when I saw my picture pop up the first thing I did was look at my form, then the flow then my form. I am not good looking hurdler. But I do my best to get over the hurdles.

I will try and post some pictures as the meet goes on but my job this weekend is to run, cheer and cheer louder!

Stay tuned and as always. Yours in track and field,

A.

HOLY COW HOLY WOW

Hey Lancers,
Sorry for not blogging as much in the last week. Been super busy with training and that other thing student athletes have to do...learn. But I have big news and I will try and get through it all.

1st – new school record - 5th year shot putter Andy Ysebaert set a new school record with a throw of 17.23 meters. Andy had this big throw at the Mayo Invitational at the University of Norte Dame. With this throw Andy is now ranked 2nd in the country. The other school record was set by senior distance runner Anthony Berkis with a new time 4:02. In the world of milers the 4 minute barrier is recognized as a level of achievement.

2st – CIS auto times for relays - The means 4x200m, Women’s 4x200m and 4x400m all achieved a CIS auto standard performance. With these times they punched their tickets to the CIS championships in March.
3rd – More CIS auto performances - From Notre Dame -7 CIS Qualifying Performances - From York -4 CIS Qualifying Performances

I did not have a good weekend in York but that was yesterday and this weekend is looking promising. I will report back later on how the meet goes for the team.
Keep following Lancers for updated info on team performances.

PS. NEWS UPDATE
The Men’s and Women’s team are now ranked 1st in the country! For the last couple of weeks the Men’s team has been in 1st by only a handful of point and the women’s team floating around the 3-5 position. After this weekend three-way split squads performances both teams have secured their dominance in the CIS as the top teams.
GO LANCERS GO!

Senior Sunday

Hey Lancers,

So todays post is about a few things. First. Meet results. The team came home with 26 medals from the Findley Ohio meet and with some huge PB's and SB's. (meet notes to be posted)

The other great news is the team spirit. For me its my third year on the team and I love being here and you can feel that energy in the field house during practice, meets and other Lancer events. Today was the Volleyball team Senior Day as they say thank you to their graduating athletes. 7 members of the men's will not be returning and they played their hearts out during a heated match against Mac. During the women's game they fought hard for a close loss but looked sharp. The Lancer Track and Field team was out in full force supporting their fellow Lancers as they did battle on the court. A solid turn out of Lancers were in attendance and showed their spirit. Rookie multi athlete east coaster Jesse Drennan was very vocal in his support for the team.

Its the games like this that we as a team get to come together and show the school that we love being Lancers and support all of our teams. It can sometimes be hard to watch a track meet since some events are only a few seconds or the person you are watching only gets 3 attempts. But we (the T&F) team love any support we can get when we have home meets. If you want to spectate and want more information go to golancers.ca for all meet info.

This week is going to be a hard one with the squad being split three ways. So stay tuned for more.

Yours in track and field,

Austin.

Like the Link!

Hey Lancers,
For up to date information of the Track and Field team go to golancers.ca or http://sportingcanada.com/tf. These two sites have great current information how all team developments.
After this weekends performances at the Mike Lints and Don Wright the Men’s squad has moved into first place in the CIS with 112 points. The second place spot is currently occupied by Guelph with 88 points. Hopefully the squad keeps this lead and builds on it as the most of the team will be traveling to Findley Ohio for the Findley Classic.
Female Lancer Captain Kelsi Mayne will be singing the national anthem at the opening of the meet. This will be the 12th year in a row that the Lancer team has attended the meet.

In other excited new. Former Lancer team member Alanna Kelly is competing in the Lancer Life photo contest and needs your help. Vote and support your fellow Lancers.

Weekend update

Hey Lancers,

So this weekend we had a split squad and the team was at two meets competing and working hard. The majority of the team went to the Mike Lints Invitational at Grand Valley State University. A van full of athletes went to the Don Wright Team Challenge at the University of Western in London. Both squads had great success and brought home some hardware and CIS auto qualifying performances.

Full results to be posted.

I ran at the Don Wright meet this year instead of going to the Grand Valley meet because I am from just outside of London and racing there is like a second home meet for me. I raced there last year and finished 3rd so I thought lets go again and have another good race. I finished 3rd again behind the top hurdler in the country Matt Brisson from Western and the top Quebec hurdler from Sherbrooke. I tied my personal best of 8.44 but was hoping for a better finish. Right now in the CIS the top 6 out of 12 spots have achieved the auto standard of 8.32 and I am ranked 8th with my time.

Also at the Western Meet triple jumper Jaideene won the very deep women's triple jump with a leap of 12.50. Branden Wilhelm, Lisa Van Espn and Shannon Mueller all contested the 60m hurdles and made the finals.

Next week the squad heads off to Findley Ohio for their next indoor meet.

Just another day at the office

Hey Lancers,

So practice yesterday was an easy one. Nothing like a tempo workout to shake out the legs and get a good workout in.

After the workout I had a therapy appointment with Dave down stairs in the Green Shield Clinic. I have been having some issues with a bone spur in my left ankle and it is starting to cause issues with calf and hamstring but Dave is keeping healthy and in the game.
Since the sprint squad had a tough workout on Tuesday they got the day off and got to rest up. The mid distance squad though had a speed workout and were booking it on the track doing some  long fast repeats.

I will sometimes maybe forget to talk about the other event groups but I will have guest blog posts from other event groups to update everyone on how their training is going.

Austin.

Drug Ed seminar

The Lancer track and field, women's volleyball and curling teams just finished their mandatory drug-ed seminar. Thanks Neil from the CCES and the university health unit.

Always surprises me who is still taking drugs to try and get an edge or keep their edge.

If you want any info from the seminar go to the CCES website @cces.ca. From there you can find all the information needed on what you can and can NOT take.

Yours in track and field,

Austin.

Also...I will be posting on how training went tomorrow and how the team is getting ready for the big weekend.

Hey Lancers,

So each blog submission will consist of how my training is going and then how the team is doing. I will try and link some of the other team members daily training logs on how their training is going.
Tues/Jan/17

On most Tuesdays and Thursdays I have hurdle practice. I am the only individual hurdler on the men's squad but the multiple event guys do come out and workout with me when they can. Its hard some days when you are the only guy out there. Track and field is an individual sport but here at Windsor we are a Lancer family. It was a good workout but I was feeling sluggish. Donny and Nards (Kevin Denardo) were there coaching Branden, Sarah the two new rookies on the team and they had good workouts.

We had our team meeting at 4 and Head Coach Denis updated us on team performances from the official Lancer home opener the Can Am Classic. The team did really well with 27 medals won from the two days of competing.  I will link the meeting notes for full details.
Enough about me though.

After my lift (its going to be hard to stop talking about me though) I was down in the Green Shield Therapy room icing up and the sprint squad came in and they looked tired. The squad had some long speed and everyone still looked tired from the meet. Allison Loyst a 2nd year thrower was in putting some heat on her hips and I asked her how she was doing in preparation for her Olympic lifting competition on the weekend. She is a lifter turned thrower who is the top junior athlete in the country and is the top contender for the senior spot for her weight class. She said that she is "PUMPED" but has to contain the excitement and wants to do her best for herself and as a Lancers. Cause we only know how to do one thing and that's win. (or do really well)

The squad has 2 meets coming up this weekend but I will talk more about this later in week.

Yours in track and field,

A.
